on-demand scan not working in groupshield

I cannot get scan to work in Groupshield v5 on my NT4 SP6 server

Whenever I try to run a scan I get a message saying:

The command could not be issued to the Anti-Virus service on AMS-EXCH. The service appears to not be running.
Start service now?

I click yes but nothing happens. Looking in services I note that they are running (with correct account), although I wonder if Groupshield did not install properly as I cannot stop or start the service (options greyed out) and the version tab of groupshield shows 'Not Known' for all info except Server admin extension.

Does anyone have any ideas why this isn't working?
 
I've noted that I can run an On Demand Scan direct by running ODConsole.exe from explorer but it still won't run from the tab in Groupshield properties in Exchange Admin
 
Can you log into the group shield account locally? If so, stop the service, then reset the password for the service-exchange account and then change your login back to original settings.

no can't start or stop the service, buttons greyed out.
