on board video failure

Help!! I am trouble shooting a desktop (HP) that stalls on the HP splash screen on boot up. Using a pci diagnostics card I get a code 55 error, This code says to replace video card When I put a pci video card in and hook a test monitor to it it still stalls and wont boot. My guess is the mother board is shot, since I can't get past the video check on boot up, I cant disable the on board video if necessary. before i give the bad news to the guy I thought I would run it by you guys first. Any ideas??
