Didn't want to hijack Nocandu's thread as my issue is slightly different:
I have 3 entries on the boot screen because of a failed install.
I had a vista computer.
I installed a second hard drive so I could dual boot Vista/Win7

The second hard drive turned out to be bad but it worked long enough to get Win7 mostly installed before it started crapping out.

Got the second drive replaced and installed Win7 on it.
But now I have a boot screen that shows me 2 Win7s and a Vista choice. I want to get rid of the middle entry (the known bad Win7 install).

Just not quite sure where to go whacking.
:eek:)

I meant to add that I did try deleting it from the boot tab of msconfig but it came back after reboot.

I'll quote myselft from Nocandu's thread:

Me said:
You would have to use bcdedit.exe from the command line in Win 7, to delete the "Legacy" line of the boot file,...

You want to do the same thing, using bcedit.exe just delete the line that refers to the botched Win7 install.

Since the install never completed, there shouldn't be anything left to remove but the line in the boot file.

Just be careful what you delete.

Ohh and you'll need Admin privileges so run the command line as an Administrator.

Doh! I tried that but didn't launch it as an admin. No wonder it didn't work. This time I ran the program but it just gives me this:
Code:
C:\Windows\system32>bcdedit.exe

Windows Boot Manager
--------------------
identifier              {bootmgr}
device                  partition=D:
description             Windows Boot Manager
locale                  en-US
inherit                 {globalsettings}

toolsdisplayorder       {memdiag}
timeout                 30

Windows Boot Loader
-------------------
identifier              {current}
device                  partition=C:
path                    \Windows\system32\winload.exe
description             Windows 7

usefirmwarepcisettings  No

description             Microsoft Windows Vista
locale                  en-US

nx                      OptIn
usefirmwarepcisettings  No
and then takes me back to the c prompt
are there command line switches I should be entering?

Yes. for starters try the /? to get all the help on the bcdedit.exe

From Microsofts TechNet page. Link after the quote.
MS said:
How to delete a boot entry

At the command prompt, type:

bcdedit /delete ID [/f]

Option Explanation

ID

Specifies the GUID of the boot entry you want to delete. If ID is not specified, the current boot entry ID will be deleted.

If you specify a well-known GUID, you will have to force the deletion by specifying /f. For example:

bcdedit /delete {default} /f

For example, the following command deletes the entry with id {802d5e32-0784-11da-bd33-000476eba25f}.

bcdedit /delete {802d5e32-0784-11da-bd33-000476eba25f}

Use the EasyBCD prog from Linney's Post...

then look at the BOOT LOADER on the VISTA partition ( C: ), there is your ENTRY that needs to be AXED...

the one that you listed, only has TWO entries, and it is the current one being used, it picks up the entry from the original VISTA one and adds it to the MENU...

I tried to run bcdedit.exe and the program would open for less then a second and vanish.

I downloaded the EasyBCD program and that seems to work.
I don't really want to change anything right now so I can't test it but I'm ready when I need to.

Thanks for the information.

Did you run the command prompt first?

Its a Command line application. As such if you run it from the search box in the start menu it will do its thing and then close.

Open a command prompt with Admin Privileges and then you can run it from there.

Thank you folks! I think I have the hang of it now.
