I am wondering if any of you have seen or solved this problem. I have a client who in running Win XP Home. When she boots up she gets the Windows login box asking for her username and password.

If she clicks OK she is let right into Windows but gets an error message stating

Explorer.exe-Unable to locate component
"The application failed to start because oleaut32.dll was not found. Reinstalling the application may fix the problem."

If I click OK I get a blank desktop with no icons or taskbar.

I would really hate to have to reinstall Windows but if I have to I will. I am just hoping you guys can give me a secret!

If she has access to a Command Prompt or even the Start Run box try re-registering that Dll.

Regsvr32 oleaut32.dll

If that doesn't work see if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Explorer.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

This is an annoying problem. What happens is an older application replaces the right version of OLEUT32.DLL

See, if this answers the question:

Kelly Theriot noted:

This generally has to do with the opening of second windows in IE and easily cured by going to:

Start/Run and typing in: regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
