Good Day All,

I created a Database on our SQL Server and then created an ADP using this DB.
(PS: I haven't created an ADE file yet)

There is something I do not understand however.
If I run the ADP from another machine, it can not connect to the database (even though I can ping the server successfully). If I set up an ODBC datasource to the SQL Server and immediately delete it (even though I haven't even run the app), it then connects successfully to my database.

What is happening?
Surely it shouldn't use ODBC?
Is something missing on our setup? Or am I missing something? (quite likely!)
I am programmer and distinctly not clued up on networking issues, but it is important to me to find the reason why the application will not just run on any machine which has Win 2000 and Office 2000 installed...

If you have any advice please let me know!
Regards,
EvE

Do you have the same versions/releases of Office 2000 and other supporting products on the other PC's. Do you have the same net libraries set up - i.e. TCP/IP etc...

Hello,

Yes, they are all the same.
I would like to understand exactly how access links to SQL Server under a correct set-up - I can not find any satisfactory help files about this (yet!).

E.g. if I know that Access should be using OLE DB to access SQl - how can I "test" what is actually currently happening with the connection my application use?

Thank you so much in advance - please stop me if I am barking up the wrong tree ;-)

What login are you using on the other PC's? NT Authenication? SQL Server login? Does the Login in ID have permissions on the database.

What error message and when are you getting?

I have made it simple in log into my DB with the default "sa" account - which certainly does have permissions.
Not getting error messages - its just when the project is opened it shows that "Database disconnected" because it could not connect in the first place - so I can not see any of the tables.

However, as I said, when I create and immediately delet an SQL Server ODBC driver to the Database and run the app again - it connects!
It is almost asif the process of setting up an ODBC to the database sets something that is missing - but once it is done, it is done regardless of whether the ODBC exists or not.

Do you have the same version of the MDAC libraries? Does the development PC have a later version of MDAC? Even though is shows disconnected, can you connect or do you get an error?

Nope, it just tries for a while (hourglass) and then shows in the header bar: "(disconnected) MyDB" - I can access the forms etc, but not run them or see tables etc.

I have checked on two machines and it seems to be MDAC 2.5 we run.

Thanks in advance!
