First, I'm not yet the expert you may think I am...
Second, at this point, I consider myself a complete ignorant on server side scripts and/or especially on database work!
I would of help you if I could, only didn't reply because I didn't know where to start!

thing = datalist.firstChild.nodeValue.toLowerCase().toString();
...might be nothing to do with your problem but did you mean...
thing = datalist.firstChild.nodeValue.toString().toLowerCase();
?
On a quick read through, and with no XML files handy to test the parsing scripts, everything else looks okay to me.
