For certain reasons, we needed an "older" mac setup for the internet using dialup. I had a powermac 7600 (132mhz, 64mb ram) which had a bad hard drive. I replaced the hd (2gb) and installed system 8.5. Everything worked, even the Stylewriter 1500 connected to the serial port. I then added an external modem and setup the driver and dialup settings (in modems and remote access in control panel). It dialed up and I got online with no problems. I went to a page and tried to print it, but got an error that the printer couldn't print. It said to make sure my printer was connected to the printer port - which it already is, but apparently it thinks it is connected to the modem port, which is where the modem is attached. I then went to chooser and selected the 1500 printer and the printer port (modem port was already highlighted), and it said AppleTalk was active and it needed to make it unactive. I clicked OK, but the same problems occurs. Since it appeared that the printer wanted to print from the modem port, I tried swapping the printer and modem cables (printer in modem jack and modem in printer jack) and changed the corresponding settings in control panel. The printer now worked, but I could no longer dialup using the modem. It said someone is already using the port, and to close that application. There is no other application. What gives????
