I've just inherited an older ipod. This iPod was made before they were compatable with Windows. Is there a way to indeed use this iPod with on a Windows PC? Any help would be appreciated.

I would

1. Figure out what firmware is on it.
2. Upgrade it to the newest firmware the hardware supports.
3. Reformat it with FAT32.
4. Hope for the best.

Should be. I have one of the first 5gb models, and it works fine on both.

You have to use the updater from Apple to change the format, which wipes the Ipod, so make sure you back it up first.

*note - forgot to say - when I say both, I mean one or the other. It'll connect to both if you areusing it as a protable hard disk, but it'll only connect to Itunes on the format you have chosen.

Yes - find out which model you currently have by checking settings > about (if it's 1.x it's a first gen, etc.) - then download the latest update from apple and format from there. If trouble using the updater, when is seen as disk by the PC, do as ObviousTroll says and format as FAT32 from windows explorer, then run the updater. A hint - make sure the PC can see the ipod as a drive (not c or d, preferrably change the drive letter to something like i) - there's an article on apple site about problems with windows recognizing or trying to map as a network drive and not actually formatting or being able to do a music update.
