If I Blow away the windows directory, will i be able to do a new install of w95 without harming the data not found in the windows directory?

Windows is hanging at startup. I've disabled files that might be hanging at startup. And windows wont let me in the RUN folder in the registry, so I figured I reinstall. I've tried everything.

Have you tried reinstalling windows over top of the original, without blowing away the windows dir?
If you remove the windows dir (in DOS obviously), some of your programs won't work, and will have to be reinstalled, but you should be able to keep most of the original data intact. If you use Outlook, you'll lose all your mail, and mail settings, though you may be able to import the address book and such later on.
Have you tried editing the registry from safe mode? Cheers,

Thanks.

Reinstalling w95 is my last resort for the reasons you mention.

The system wont let me reinstall over the OS, saying it already has one.
I REMed out the things that were in the Autoexec and Config files.

As far as outlook is concerned, we have everyone "synching on exit", so Im going to move the .pst, ost, and pab files to a safe place.

When I access the registry through regedit, it locks when I click on the Microsoft folder.

The system loads everything until just after the desktop icons appear. I can log on to the network and then it freezes Now it doesnt do it in Safe Mode, but it does lock if I try to access certain folders in the explorer.

I run scandisk, and there was a 30 meg chunk of files it couldnt fix.

And sometimes you have to delete the desktop subdirectory. Just save the stuff somewhere else. Ed Fair
