Old School Help Needed.

Hello all,

I have a issue I am currently working on and I am having trouble as I do not normally deal with copper..

I have a pbx in one building that connects to another building a block away. Each building has a box with lightning caps in them, they are Red in color and have I think 5 pins on them. The box also has a few 110 blocks inside. I am having difficulty testing these "lightning fuses" as I do not have a tester of anykind for these. I am able to put my toner on and I can receive tone from one end to the other but it seems washed out and no voice will travel through, so I suspect a "fuse" problem?? It is also possible there just bad wiring but one problem at a time.

Is there some sort of fuse I can plug in that I can connect a analog/digital phone directly to, I think I've seen one before, it was a 5 pin fuse thing that plugs into the lightning box and had a Rj11 at the end for testing. This is a hard thing to find on the web so figured I'd ask here.

Excuse my bad terminology on these things, most of my stuff is voip/sip. I had to dust my toner and probe off for this. :)



 
Just because it tones out it does not mean it has continuity, a simple multi meter should be able to tell you if the fuses test ok.
 
I did not have a multimeter on me, and I do not know the method for testing the fuses and what to look for. Suppose if I find a working one I can test it and document what I get. Thanks for advice.



 
I think your talking about 4B3S-75 5 pin fuse inside an 24100-66-M66C box or similar type scenario. If you have toner with a continuity function this is the what I recommend doing. Use a 1 Pair 110-RJ45 cat5e cable hooked up to a banjo to a toner set to continuity. Then on the far end short-out the same pair and see if you get a closed circuit.

The short pins are the T/R that go to the equipment.
The longer pins are the T/R to the outside plant cable.
The center pin is your ground.

Don't remove the Mango! The Mango is our friend.
 
I think some telco fuses when blown will short both pairs to ground.
