I have a Ubuntu linux machine in a low-profile, 1 year old HP desktop. I think I can get my hands on an external USR serial modem to use as a fax (hylafax) send-by-email device off of my network. [Buying a new, internal, low-profile PCI modem seems kinda wasteful]
It's literally been YEARS since I've handled a modem on linux (thanks broadband!)... wanted to know if anyone had any particular votes on external modem technology for simple fax (in-/out-bound) activities.
Q: USB vs. Serial port
Q: Hardware modem vs. softmodem/winmodem (I presume 99% of all external modems are hardware now)
Q: Favorite vendors where keeping costs down is an interest
[I HAVE examined commercial services for efax, and voip-style solutions. I'm pretty low fax usage and already have the phone line. However, any alternatives are still welcome discussion too!]
