I have replaced a network card with a new card different model and I forgot to remove the IP address when I went to set up the network card I got a message telling me the old card still had the ip adress and it may cause problems.

Well as a result no pcs can talk to the server, is there a way that I can remove the old NIC's referances on the server

are you using DHCP and reserve IP for your servername ? If yes, go to DHCP server and just delete or reset the card.

Did you replace the NIC in a client machine or on the server?

First do a ipconfig /flushdns and if that dont work you can do one of two things. Go into control panel and remove that hardware and if that is already done you will have to go into the registry and remove the entry from there. I dont know exactly when it will be but I would just do a search for the nic name or the IP address.

aswell as flushing the DNS, you could also try the ipconfig /release command.

Then go into the NIC settings and assign it the same IP address as the old card.

I can't see this causing you too much of a problem :)

On second thoughts, the /release command probably wont work on the Server NIC as I assume its not using DHCP!

Is the New NIC using the same IP address as the old or have you configured a different address?

The new NIC is using the same ip as the old one as its my exchange server

It wouldn't be reserved in your DHCP server? A reserved IP there attaches to the MAC of the NIC. Just a thought.

I've had this happen to me before too. You will need to do a search in the registry for the IP address and that will help you locate the reference to the old NIC. Delete the reg keys for that old nic or just alter the ip address associated with that key.

I hope you find this post helpful.
