how can i copy a large folder (800 mb )from any pc to (old laptop with no cd drive & no connection to the internet)
because i want to upgrade the windows from win 95 to another one, so i want to copy the new windows to the hard of the laptop and then setup it, but there is no cd drive in the laptop

It is very unlikely a laptop that originally was running W95 will be capable of running XP.
For starters:
Does this W95 machine have at least a 500mhz CPU, an absolute minimum of 128mb of ram (256mb min recommended)

And even if the laptop meets these specs are all the necessary drivers available for XP:
ie: Graphics/Sound/Modem/Touch pad etc

I agree, I would say the most you could ugrade to would be W2K? even that would be a push.

And, would would only be able to upgrade not have a full install. Which is a mistake in itself.

Also, would a laptop that originally had W95 have a hard drive that was 800mb or above?

Just a bit of 2 cents.

Though if you REALLY want to give it a bash. You could hook up a Serial cable and do it that way, though it would take a long time. Or whack in a PCMCIA network card and hook it up to a network.

Cheers!!

how can make a network between the laptop and the pc

As has been said, you can use a serial cable or a PCMCIA network adapter. There are USB LAN devices on the market as well, which come with Win95 drivers, in case your laptop has USB ports.

can you tel me how can i use serial cable
step by step please

Connect your computers via a serial cable (female RS232 jacks on both ends). Then assign static IP addresses for both computers. For Win95, use winipcfg (just click "Run" from Start Menu, type WINIPCFG and press Enter). For new systems, use Network Connections window.

Share the folder that is to be copied. Go back to your laptop, click "Run" from Start Menu again and type the other computer's IP address with two backslashes before (e.g. \\192.168.254.2). Press Enter, open the window, go to the shared folder and copy them.

Ummm...
#1 - In my 20+ years of computing, I've never seen a place to assign an IP address to a serial port.
#2 - It would have to be a crossover cable.
#3 - You would either need to set up SLIP, or run comm software and copy the files...

Ok, I think I have the easiest solution. How about taking the hard drive out of the old laptop put it in an external USB case? You could then connect to any XP machine and copy the files over needed to install.

So, for instance, if you wanted to upgrade to 98 you could just put the hard drive back in the machine, boot to a floppy, switch to the C drive and start the install. You can find external 2.5" USB cases just about anywhere for under $30.

In the Windows 95 machine you would have to hope it was installed with Windows 95B otherwise it won't support any USB device.

Personally, anything that old, would get taken to the desert for some .45 target practice ) or in a less violent death, I'd remove the hard drive and donate it to Goodwill. Good luck!

Susytek, you never did answer paprazi's question - what's the spec of the laptop. It would be an awful waste of time to copy the CD of another OS (you didn't specify which) to you laptop only to find it didn't work!

Well, gbaughma, it's not assigning an IP address TO a serial port. The rest of my post was actually related to crossover connection, thanks for pointing out the missing part in my post.

However, I'm inclined to assume that the laptop doesn't have a RJ-45 port. In this case, ArizonaGeek's suggestion seems the most reasonable way; I'm not fond of serial cable connections myself.

i'm sorry
can you please tel me again
how can i use rs 232 to connect between two computer one of them win 95 and the other win xp

suzytek:

ArizonaGeek had the best solution.

1) Get yourself a $20 USB laptop drive enclosure.
2) Pull the drive out of the old laptop and put it in the enclosure.
3) Plug the enclosure into your XP box.
4) Copy away.
