Greetings.

History: A power surge fried my old Lappy. I removed the HDD and plugged it into an 2.5" IDE in hopes of recovering my data.

Issue: I can access the old HDD, but the files under my UID are password protected. I know the password, but I cannot find away to disable the protection.

Question: Does anyone know a way that I can access my files? There are some *sentimental* photos (*Read - Sexy Shots of my wife) on that HDD that I would just <3 to recover.

Thanks for your time.

This is generally an anti-theft issue with the laptop manufacturer. It keeps the laptop from being used if it is stolen.

One way would be to call the laptop manufacturer, provide sufficient proof of ownership, and they should be able to provide you with a one time backdoor password.

Haven't had any occasion to try one out of the box so I can't be certain that it will work the way I suggested.

Thank you for giving us the link to an additional tool.
