My old computer stopped working, so I bought a new one. Now I want to get the information stored on my old master harddrive into my new one. I've changed it to "slave" and put it in, but although my new computer recognizes there is a new harddrive it won't read anything from it. It suggests I should format it, which of course isn't my intention...

The problem might be that i used Windows '98 on the old one, and the new one uses Windows XP.

How about putting it in as the only one as master and see if it doesn't try to come up in 98. You should get several error messages, but at least it should try.
There are media descriptor problems between different versions of windows that do create this sort of problem. And if this is your problem you'll have to figure out a way to transfer through a second machine in two steps. Ed Fair

Or boot from a DOS floppy and see if you can do a dir of the old hard disk - if the BIOS has autodetected it, that is. You may need to go into the BIOS and set the disk to Auto. Many set the disks to None to reduce seek time on startup.

Also, is the new disk jumpered to Master, or Cable Select? Shouldn't make a difference, in theory, but... CitrixEngineer@yahoo.co.uk
