Hello,
I just bought a new PC and I was going to just make the old hard drive a slave and transfer files, this didnt work because the old hard drive (32 pin I think) doesn't fit the new PC's data ribbon. What is the easiest way to tranfer files from the old drive to the new drive?

Thanks

Something isn't adding up. Assuming your older drive is IDE, it will be 40-pin, the standard count for any IDE interface. Can you give make / model of your older drive?

Sorry, yes, the old drive is a 40 pin from a 1999 Dell and the new one is from Dell. I'm at work so I can't open them up. The new one is a 500Gb.

Provide further details when you can, CJ. I am interested in what ribbon-cable you were refering to in your initial post. All new Dell's, and IBM er Lenovo's, we receive at work are all strictlty SATA and USB (no more PS/2 connectors). Some of these models still support 3.5" floppy drives and provide the connector onboard, but no hardware.

I was told I could just use a cat5 cross cable and do direct communication between them, that's pretty easy isn't it? Do I just need to make them both part of the same user group?

If you are familiar with networking, then this shouldn't be too hard.

In addition to the same workgroup, you will need a common protocol, almost always TCP/IP now. With TCP/IP, both PCs will need to be in the same subnet with proper subnet masking. If you need assistance with this, ask.

You will have to enable File and Print Sharing on the older PC and create a share. Probably best to create a share right off of the root of the drive(s) so you can traverse the entire drive. Documents stored in My Documents on the older drive will probably not be directly accessible from the newer PC due to access rights.

What OS are you using on the two systems?

The new one is Vista and the old one is 98.
