Any guidelines to suggest? I'm thinking specifically of P1 computers. I know from experience to avoid alpha and heavy tweening but that really limits what you can do in Flash.

It seems that every site that I try to run on a P1 fails miserably in terms of performance (not just my own sites). Is it a lost cause to even try? Would I be better off directing these people to the HTML version?

If you want to design high-end web content with flash then I'd go for the bigger market. Anyone using an old machine is going to be used to not getting being able to view the high-end stuff either very well or at all. If you do have concerns with people on lower machines then yes, design a html site for them.

Another way would be to really plan your site out so people on lower spec machines can view it. There is more to Flash than alpha FX and you can be very resourceful with your tweens so that they don't overload the smaller processors.....
