Hi all,
We have a computer name for some odd reason still caching DNS information.
The computer (computer1) crashed so it was rebuild. The new computer (computer2) has a different name and all information for the old computer as been removed, ad account, dns record, and dhcp record.
However because another computer, (computer3) is receiving the same ip address, when you ping computer 1 and ping computer3 you received the same ip address and both resolve with dns info.

Ping computer1 (computer not around anymore)
pinging computer1.domain
reply from x.x.x.1
"
"
"

Ping computer2
ping computer2
reply from x.x.x.1
"
"
"

Now that just confused me completely.
Any ideas?
Thanks

the computer you are pinging from has a local dns cache.

perform a ipconfig /flushdns (if Windows) command and try it again.

do the flush dns on the old computer or the computer that is getting the old computers address?
If it to flush on the old computer, this cannot be done, as it has already been reimaged and renamed.

Whichever PC you are doing the ping from. Also, perform a NSLOOKUP to find out who is resolving those names for you.

Hi, I did flush the dns from my computer and ping the old computer name and -a ip address, and they are still showing the same address for both names.
also did the nslookup for the old computer name. came back with its name and the ip address
did the lookup using the ip address and that came back with the current computer name and and correct address.

This is odd as the old computer should not come back with anything

in the lookup what DNS server did the resolution (authoritative response)? Sounds like you still have a record in your DNS. Also, do you use WINS?

Found it!
There was a record in the Primary DNS hidding. Needed to dig pretty deep to find it.

Thank you for all your help.
