I have been able to copy an email outside of the exchange organization/outlook 2003 to a folder on the c: and then another user can open it without a problem and also open the attachment.
We are toying with the idea of organizing emails on the c: (say a network driive) from certain people so all can view

Is it OK to copy an email form outlook via exchange 2003 to a folder on the c: drive, in other words copy outside of outlook? Are there any implications such as

1) where does an attachment in the email reside?
2) can other users open emails not addressed to them?
3) If I delete the original email off the server, what happens to the copied email. I understand that exchange keeps only one copy of attachment. Is this true in this case?

Thanks

Yup, that's what public folders were made for. You'd have much better search capabilities that way as well.

Assuming you decide to try public folders, here are the answers to your earlier questions, using public folders:

1. The attachment is still associated with the email and exists in the public folder.
2. You would assign permissions to each public folder individually, and a user with rights on that public folder could open any item within it, regardless of who it was originally addressed to.
3. Deleting the original email would not affect the copy in the public folder.

Thanks for your responses.

Some people here at work are suggesting we move away from public folders and into regular folders. There we can store sizable pics, drawings, faxes, etc along with the emails under one folder pertaining to say a customer or an order. Outside of search reasons I am try to compile an additional arguments one way or another. Initially, I was suprised microsoft allows moving emails to outside folders.
