ok i want to install openbsd on my computer. its a pcchips 748mr with sis 5595 and sis620(video) chipset with a 300 mhz intel pII oem. sound card of cm8338(soundpro) and net card of rtl 8139A and would like to install another net card. And also what programs can be used on it. Like business applications, internet surfing, office software(sun), and games????

Hey. Sounds like you should be OK as far as setting your machine up. Make sure to check the Hardware FAQ to make sure all hardware is compatable. is the compatibility list. As far as software, I run it on my laptop as a workstation and use all the common Unix apps as well as use it to configure routers and switches. If you're planningon using it as a gateway or firewall, you may not want to run any apps on it, but if your rulebase is tight enough you'll be OK. It uses IPF (there is a list here for it). I use enlightenment as a window manager and netscape to browse, it also supports KDE and afterstep. Gnome is in the works. As far as games I can't answer, I've never tried any games on it.

ok sound goods to me. But i don't have the luxury to purchase another computer so have to use mine. which would ok if i can use a office suite in it and have a x-gui enviroment. why i was asking (i thought maybe staroffice but sun hasn't answered me yet.

You probably can use star office, I've never done it, OpenBSd does support antiword. as well as wordperfect. wordperfect would probably be more what you were looking for. You can also dual boot with another OS, that works well, I've done it for some other prople in my office who have to have windows support.

ok but i can only boot os at a time. the fire wall not be effective that way. But no office suite like excel, work, adresses contact list?

This is true, if it is to be a firewall, you'll obviously need it up all the time. I'm sure that there is a full featured suite like you want, I just don't know of it offhand. I'm installing Wordperfect as we speak on my laptop to see what the OpenBSD version vomes with.

i've been doing more studying on openbsd. i would like to play with it. it sounds like its what i need........ I'm gonna see if i can get the handbook downloaded and do more research.

that what they said about linux.... now look it. i thin at one it was good. now its all choped up

Well, OpenBSD is closely moderated by the authors, BSD style is very different than the way the linux community manages / is managed.

now just need a test computer to play with and 4 mil to pay my familys debts and live happly.

hahah, nice. Enjoy OpenBSD, it's a great OS, I run it on about everything I have.

If you want a full-featured Office suite for Unix, try KDE2 with Koffice (included). Get it at It is a bit of a pain to compile, so if OpenBSD has packages for it already, do that. (I'm more familiar with FreeBSD)

Koffice has a nice complete office suite, including a spreadsheet, word processor, multimedia presentations, contact manager, DHTML-ready web browser, and more. The spreadsheet and word processor can open Microsoft documents, although I don't know about saving in M$oft format.

I'm not sure that openbsd has support in the /usr/ports but I'll bet with some tweaking it's work =)

I am trying to configure my Openbsd machine as a NAT server and am having a little trouble. I am not sure what is going wrong, I think it is my second interface. I am not sure of the exact configuration for the clients (dhcp or w/or w/o default gateway) and of the second interface (static 192.168.x.x or something else) also have some other questions if anyone thinks they could help.....I would be forever in your debt. Thanks
