Well, I'll try to make this short and sweet.

I recently d/led a file of Kazaa, which said it must be opened while Windows was in safe mode. Stupid me did it. After that, my computer would come on, but just before Windows would load, it would reset itself. So I went and bought a virsu scanner and made a bootdisk. This didnt help.

My next thought was that the System folder was now gone. So I slaved it to my other computer, but I know you have to fromat and partition the dirve before you can retieve files. I am trying to stay away from formatting due to the fact that it has been so long since I backed it up. {Stupid, BTW}

So if anyone knows a way I can retrieve some files off this hd, I would be very appreciative.

Thanks very much!

vyosh, What operating system you using?
I assume you want to restore or re-install Windows instead of formatting and losing all the files on the hard drive. If you partition and format the drive it will be very dificult and time consuming to restore your files.

If you've got another machine, have you tried virus scanning problem disk there? Also, try running chkdsk from there.

There's also the repair option using the 2k install CD (once you're sure no virus & disk integrity ok).

Im running XP Pro. Also, I have it hooked up as slave right now, but the new computer is recognizing the hd in bios, but not in windows. I was under the impression that you had to completely format the hd to have it show up in windows. But yes, all I want to do is reytrieve a few files then I can format it. Thanks~!

If you can't access the drive as slave in new machine (both running XP? both ntfs? - anything unusual (eg, overlay software/you partitioned problem drive with somethying other than XP originally), I'd put it back in original machine and run a repair reintall - (keeps you data, settings and apps).

How are you trying to access the slave in XP? - My Computer? Try Start, Run, diskmgmt.msc - does the drive show up? What's it's status?
