I replaced the file and print server in my AD environment with a new server. The new server was named something other than the server it replaced. All of the files and folders were copied over to the new server and everything seemed fine. One thing that was overlooked was Offline files. All of the systems were pointed to the old server for offline files and now they are still looking for the old server. How can I fix this? I have tried sever things via group policy, but nothing has worked.

Any help would be appreciated.

I am trying to get rid of the old server for offline files from the user desktops...

thanks..

Go to one PC. Find the references to the old server name in registry and in particular the one for offline files. Delete the entry or change it to your new server name if required. Export this registry key now it is correct. Add it to all the other client PC's using a login script that imports the registry key you exported.

Has to be worth s go!

I was able to go through my computer and change from pointing to the old server and point to the new one... but how do I do this via a script for the rest of the computers on the network?

Ok - what you need to is find the regsitry entry on the PC you have changed and export it to a file. You then need to move this into a public location that everyone has access to - for example a folder on a network drive that everyone has full access to. Call it offline.reg

Do that and then let me know and I will tell you what is next.

You could change the file redirection with Group Policy as well. That would require a lot less administrative overhead than importing a registry file on all of your computers.

arighi71,
Could you post teh reg key that you had to edit. We have the exact prblem here and need to fix our issue.

Thanks

I am still trying to get this fixed... anyone have any insight on this issue as of late?

You could move the files to the new server, create an alias IP on the new server to match the old server, and then create a DNS record with the old servers name that points to the old servers IP. That might trick it into thinking the old server is still there. Make sure that the permissions match on the folders after you copy them over, and make sure that the share names and folder structure are identical. That might be enough to fool offline folder, but who knows. Keep in mind that you will have to shut the old server off once you create the IP alias, etc.

I will look into the alias idea. I will look into that and see if it works.

I will post the results.

thanks.
