Does anyone know if all XP drivers apply to the new Server 2003?

I cannot install the drivers for our Officejet 7110 on a Server 2003 machine but HP does not have an alternative driver.

thanks

HP is currently developing drivers to be used with Windows Server 2003 for a lot of printers, but officially no XP drivers are supported only suggested as alternates to install a driver. Many XP drivers can be modified as a workaround for usage with Windows Server 2003 by editing the driver .ini file. Personally I doubt HP will develop drivers for all their printers to be used with Windows Server 2003.

Here is what HP responded with in this case:

The error - Operating System does not match requirements, is because
Windows 2003 Server operating system is not supported by the your HP
Officejet 7110 all-in-one and also by all the other all-in-one devices.
Windows 2003 Server operating system is basically designed for the
client server networks. Communication with printers on a client server
network is routed through a dedicated computer. All-in-one devices
support only peer-to-peer networks. Full product functionality cannot
be achieved in this configuration. HP will not support any solution
that the product was not designed to work under and that will not
provide full product functionality.

The HP software was designed to work with the Professional versions of
Windows 2000. Server versions may or may not work correctly. HP does not support installation on server versions of the operating system.

Following Windows based operating systems are supported by your HP
Officejet 7110

Windows 98
Windows NT 4.0
Windows 98SE
Windows Millennium Edition
Windows 2000 (Service Pack 2 or higher required)
Windows XP

I'm a newbie to this forum, so please excuse me if this has been answered before. Are there any general rules for massaging .inf and other setup control files so that either:

a) the installer will think it is dealling with an XP OS, or
b) accept Win 2003 server as an elegible OS.

Hi aztecdata,

just wondering if you have solved this problem at all. I am still looking for an answer.

thanks,

I've managed to get basic printer functionality, which is OK for my servers. I can live with the full scanner/fax capability limited to the workstations for the moment. If I get any better results, I'll post them here.

From memory, I added a computer account to active directory and a dns record for the HP office jet printer. I think that I then installed the printer on the workstation with the HP software and shared it. This is where it gets a bit hazy, although I do know that I didn't install the HP software on the servers.

I can't remember if I installed a network printer on the server, pointed it to the HP7110 IP address, and steered the installtion process to the driver directory on the HP CD-ROM. Alternatively, I may have told it to use the shared workstation printer.

Whchever way that I managed it, I now have a network printer called "HP officejet 7100 series on workstation" that uses the HP standard TCP/IP ports and seems to print OK in black and white and colour directly via the network. It works OK under Server 2003 and SBS 2003 Release Candidate, although neither recognise any fax or scannning functionality.
