I have a VPN set up with my home office over a fast cable connection. I have notice that when I try to open Microsoft Word files that reside on the company servers, it can take up to 60 seconds to open and unlock a 100kb file. Does anybody know if there are settings in Microsoft Word that may cause this delay or if it is simply a speed issue? Everything else seems to work very fast and when I do bandwidth tests I am getting speeds of 700kb or better.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

the majority of residential broadband services are asynchronous. It's not just about the overall speed of your connection, but it does matter what your upload speed is too. A 1MB connection with only 80Kb upload bandwidth is going to perform quite slowly in a networked environment.

Try pulling the file down to your machine. That'll be a lot quicker.

I have a simular problem and have found it a bit quicker by choosing file open rather than double clicking the file
