Office XP Mail Merge with Access 97

We have a desktop that was recently upgraded to Office XP.
However the user chose to keep their Access 97 Databases.
When running a Mail Merge with Word XP, it run 5 to 10 times slower than with Office 97. Is there a translation step involved?
