Word closes with the following message: Microsoft Word has encountered a problem and needs to close.

I recently upgraded to Office XP Professional. All applications with the exception of Word work flawlessly. Word crashes within a few seconds whenever it is opened. The following events are written at the time of the word crash:

EventID: 1000 Source: Microsoft Office 10 Type: Error Category: None
Faulting application winword.exe, version 10.0.2627.0, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x00000000.
EventID: 1001 Source: Microsoft Office 10 Type: Error Category: None
Fault bucket 00709889.

I reinstalled multiple times following directions I found in Microsoft's knowledge base and got the same result. Each installation was done from the Add/Remove window in Control Panel Additionally, I have tried the installation using the command line
Code:
change user /install
prior to using the control panel ADD NEW Software and
Code:
 change user /execute
after installation. I get the same result whether I use the install mode commands or not.

I decided to try Office 2000 Professional and use the transform file that is available with the Office 2000 Resource kit. The only difference in the result was that Word caused a Doctor Watson instead of the message above. I am running Windows NT 4.0 build 1381 with Service Pack 6 and Windows Terminal Server build 419.

As a last resort I uninstalled Office XP, made a test group of users Administrators and reinstalled with the same result. I also deleted one user’s profile so that it would be recreated. None of these measures made any difference in the Word crashing problem.

I am relatively new to Citrix and I inherited this installation and problem. Office 97 had the same issue and my predecessor was unable to fix the problem. I have contacted Microsoft via email/online support and they have directed me to the same knowledge base articles I have already viewed and used.

Anyone seen this problem before and have any ideas.

You might want to talk with Citrix. I worked in a company that implemented Citrix and Office 2K and I know we had problems getting Citrix to behave with MS Office. I don't the details, but we ended up speaking with Citrix and helped us fix the problem.
