We have a Dell Dimension 4100 that had a hard drive crash. I installed a new hard drive and installed Windows 2000 and then Service Pack 3. I installed to a single NTFS partition. Everything works fine at this point. I installed Office 2000 and the installation went OK. I then try to open any Office program and the program begins starting as normal and then hangs up the entire machine. Ctrl+Alt+Del does not do anything. The machine is locks up. I can turn the power off and reboot and all other programs work fine. If I try to open an Office program the same thing happens again. It makes no difference as to what Office program I try to open. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I have already tried that and it makes no difference. I have also started from scratch and reinstalled the OS without any success.

Only a thought, and you may not actually have it, but have you considered installing Office 97, seeing if it works, and the perhaps doing an upgrade to 2000. I know there's no reason why it should be any different, but if you're sat there waiting for options it's something to try.

I finally was able to get things to work.

Since the computer would completely hang up, my thinking was that there was some type of hardware problem. I started up in Safe Mode and was able to access the Office programs. This must have allowed some kind of configuration to finish taking place.

I then started up normally and could open the Office programs, but when I tried to access a file on the network the Office program would hang the whole computer as before.

Still thinking that there must be some hardware problems, I downloaded the latest video and network card drivers and installed them. I then booted up in Safe Mode with Network Access and was able to open the Office programs and access the network files.

I then booted up normally and everything appears to be working normally. I am not sure why only the Office programs caused this problem, but hopefully it is finally fixed.
