Office files corrupt after recovery

A hard drive had data erased and was recovered via a file recovery utility. The office files show up with the correct icon and file type and name and file size: however they just show garbage like this ämÇ]ò;¶Š

That's the risk you take when you try to recover a file after it's been deleted. If a file is important enough, you should have made some sort of a backup before reformatting.
