Hi,
For Word documents, sometimes you can simply open the doc in Notepad and see the plain text amongst the formatting code and bits of corruption. Strip out the corrupt parts and formatting codes then save as a text file.
I know it's not very elegant, but it's a quick fix and has worked for me on numerous occasions at sites that don't want to fork out for a third party product.
