Office File Browser crashes application

Office 2003 SP3 running on XP pro fully updated.

Opening Office files by double clicking on them in Explorer works fine, but if I do a Open File from within Excel or Word the application freezes when I click on the expansion arrow.

Tried Uninstall/Reinstall, same behavior.

How can I troubleshoot?

Make sure all drive letters defined are active. If there are mapped drives on inaccessible shares or drives not currently attached or having bad media loaded, Office will hang trying to activate them when you click that arrow.

It can even cause crashes in some versions (not sure about 2k3) due to further activity during that time, like trying to close the open dialog or typing a path and filename.
