Office 97 / Windows 2000 Conflict

I have an irritating little problem that I can find no documentation on and I am hoping that I can explain it well enough that someone may have an idea what is going on.
I have 8 new machines (all clones, all identical) They have clean installs of Win2K and Office 97. I did not want to upgrade the Office package as I want to keep everyone on Access 97. Anyway the problem is with Word and Excel.
It seems that Windows has a problem with file paths that contain spaces. By this I mean that any file that is on a path that contains a space will return an error when you try to open it. This is true if the file is opened locally or across the network. The errors returned vary depending on if it is Word or Excel, but the gist is that either Win thinks that the file is already open or that it cant fine a file that is named [the part of the path up the space in the path].
Now there are some interesting conditions to this situation.
1. If Excel or Word is already open and you open from the file menu or double click the file in Explorer or something, then you do not get the errors
2. If you click through the errors, you eventually get to the file any you are not restricted in any way.

I have loaded sp2-b for Office and SP 2 for Windows 2K.
I have looked all through the M$ site and in every forum that I know of with no reference to this problem.
I have this problem on all the machines that run O97. I think it odd that I might be the only one having this problem. Perhaps I am the only one foolish enough to try 5 year old software on a new OS.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try reregistering the excel and word executable by executing the following commands:
From the run dialog "excel.exe /regserver" and "winword.exe /regserver" (without the quotes). If that doesn't work, check the file association of the files. Easy way to reassociate is to shift+right click on a file and select open with..Good luck

Worked like a charm...
Thanks so much!
