Office 97 runs very slow

We are using Office 97 on Windows 2000 Compaq machines. After installing Office and trying to run an app, it runs very slow, taking several minutes to open. This is an intermittent problem. If you log the user off, log on as another user and then log in as original user, the problem appears to go away, but will recur. It does not matter if the user has Admin rights or not. No error messages show up in the event logs.
