I'm currently using Linux at home. I have Office 2007 running on Wine. Today, I discovered that my Word documents look substantially different in Linux than they do on Windows. Lines are longer, different number of pages. Things just look really messy when viewed in Windows. Since more folks use Windows, I want to try to make my documents written in Linux look like they would on Windows. I'd like to avoid working in Windows. Thanks for your help.

I recall reading that Windows will render the display according to the printer that is selected and if this is true, could explain part of the trouble that you are facing.

My initial suggestion would be to give Open Office a try before using Word in Wine. Its document compatibility is pretty good. I would even suggest looking into using LateX, which is more difficult to learn, but is platform independent and will format much nicer than a word processor.

I agree with stefanwagner - I don't think you'll will have much luck with your approach for anything except basic text. I can take the same Word document and print to different printers and see a lot of differences even in Windows.

If it is a final document, a better (but not perfect) approach is to create a .pdf. At least then you can see what kind of mess is made right away.

Make sure the fonts you are using are available on both machines. There are

Fixed fonts
Truetype fonts
Opentype fonts

Sometimes you get a truetype and opentype font with the same name - that's when it goes really weird. Their points are slightly different.
