We are running Office 2003 with the office 2007 converter pack installed on 3 of our citrix servers. Every few months we end up having to reinstall the the converter pack on one of our servers after out of no where it just seems to break. Normally reinstalling fixes the errors but after it broke this time and reinstalling it we are now receiving different errors but the conversion will still take place and after clicking through the errors the document or spreadsheet will eventually convert and open like it should. I went through and checked the file associations and compared them to what the other servers have and all look the same.

When opening a Office 2007 docx document from the server with Office 2003 w/ converter pack installed I receive an error saying "The command cannot be performed because a dialog box is open" and another error states that "Word experienced an error trying to open file". But after clicking ok to both it opens fine.

When opening an Excel 2007 spreadsheet in Office 2003 w/ converter pack I recieve even stranger errors. The first error says "C:\Documents.xls could not be found". That would be great if that was the spreadsheat I was trying to open but it doesn't matter what spreadsheat I open, It always says that exact same error. Then it will give an error for each word in the file name it self. For example, if I open a spreadsheet named "Bobs numbers.xlsx" I will receive an error saying that it could not find "Bobs.xls" and "numbers.xls". But at the end the file conversion takes place and everything looks good.

I have been pouring over this for the past 2 days checking and double checking, comparing setting, reinstalling, and everything else in between. I'm running out of ideas.

I just found the error and corrected it. Even though all file associations looked correct via command line and through the folder options a reg entry in the classes hive was wrong.

The error was located in [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Excel.Sheet.12\shell\Open\command] which had "C:\\PROGRA~1\\MI1933~1\\OFFICE11\\EXCEL.EXE\" %1 which is not what was showing when running assoc and ftype through command line and also not showing in correctly in the folder options. The correct entry is "C:\\PROGRA~1\\MI1933~1\\OFFICE11\\EXCEL.EXE\" /e

Not sure how this changed and why it was not showing correctly but after removing the "%1" and replacing it with "/e" it works fine now.

Hi John,

thanks for keeping us informed. Will store that away for future reference.

Cheers, Glenn.
