Hi!

I spent 2 days finding a solution to this very annoying problem, but it seems impossible to find a working one, even though there are other users with the same problem I have:

I've installed Office 2007 Enterprise on my Vista x64 system, but when I'm
starting any of the Office apps, Office runs a setup/configuration prog
(Office is collecting/gathering setup information or something like that).

My event log has produced
numerous warnings, on of the more significant is :

Detection of product '{90120000-0030-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE}', feature
'ProductFiles', component '{6252B847-BADA-43D4-9252-E39767FA40A1}'
failed. The resource 'HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.pip\' does not exist.

I tried to access the HCR\.pip\ key in Regedit and receive the
following message:

"Error Opening Key
..pip can not be opened.
An error is preventing this key from being opened.
Details: Access is denied."

I have tried the Windows Installer Clean up utility to remove all
traces of Office, cleaned the registry, reinstalled Office 2007
4 times and still have the install/configuring messages popping up
upon loading the Office programs..

ANY information would be appreciated !!!

Thanx a lot Panoz

Thanx a lot mate, but unfortunately I already tried with it, without any good news..... :(

:(

Yeah !!!
I did it !!!

here's th solution :
I used a tool "Security Explorer"
downloadable from (free with 30 days evaluation)

and that tool allowed me to edit permission on
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.pip

Firstly I deleted the entry (with "Security Explorer"), then I launched excel and it automatically recreated a HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.pip in the registry (with usual anoying "gathering blablabla windows)

then I changed the permission with "Security Explorer"

as you can see in the following image:

adding my user (Alby), administrators, and also Everyone with full control on this folder (I also changed msiserver rights to full control)

I then launched excel...
and Magically NO MORE boring "gathering blablabla" windows.

I sincerely hope that it will work for you all!!!!

cheers Panoz

Congrats on finding it yourself.

I was just about to respond with it sounds like a permissions issue, specifically in the registry.

You could have tried making that account a "power user" or "administrator" until Office finished setting up and creating the registry keys.

Greetings!
I'm having the same problem with Office 2007 with Vista. First contacted Microsoft. They had me un-install, make a few registry changes, then re-install. The problem stayed. With just that one exchange, they gave up and told me to WIPE my system and start over!! Some tech support!
I downloaded and installed SECURITY EXPLORER as you suggested. It won't let me delete HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.pip. I could delete the permissions, but not the key itself. It tells me that Access is Denied.
My guess is that I don't know the program...
Can you talk me through it?
Thanks in advance!
Ray

mmm Try changing the permission with SECURITY EXPLORER allowing everybody to edit this entry , then delete the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.pip through SECURITY EXPLORER.

I'm sorry I cannot help you more.
but I was able to delete the entry...and I donno how to do in another way :(.

Good luck!

Panoz,

Thanks for the tip. I had a similar problem to ray1injt in that I could not delette .pip entry.

I then granted myself full control to the .pip subkey. This allowed me to delete the key. However, the problem did not go away.

Finally, out of sheer frustration, I granted myself full control to the entire HKey_Classes_root key and all its subkeys.

This has fixed the problem with office. In addition it has speeded up my PC significantly.

For anyone trying this out, as with any other registry changes, have restore disks prepared for your PC and BACK UP YOUR REGISTRY. I am not sure if there are any implications to security or the working of windows. Only time will tell.

Good luck.

and I forgot to mention, the problem with office occured even if an administrtor logged into the machine.

Also, the problem became really bad after SP1 of office and Vista.

So the only conclusion that I can come to is that SP1 has somehow stuffed up the permissions.

BTW. I am running Vista 64

Hi Guys.

I have done the above steps but still no joy. I have used the Security Explorer program and here's a screenshot of the result:

However the screen still appears. Please can somebody post here if they have another method. Thank you.
