What do you suggest when my home PC (XP Pro) recently has slowed down tremendously when opening Office docs?

Thanks,
Eliezer

Have you made any changes lately? How much available hard drive space do you have?

The question is a bit vague. It could be related to all sorts of things, but more than likely, if it has just started occurring, then something has changed.

Either new software installed and/or
new hardware and/or
failing hardware and/or
New Updates applied - Windows and/or Office.

Are you saying it's ALL documents, or just specific one(s)? That is a big key as well. Say you normally have 1000 or less rows of 3 to 5 columns open in an excel workbook (worksheet specifically), but one day you decide to open a worksheet that has 12 columns by 60,000 rows, and in each row, there are at least 2 formulas? That's a BIG change - the amount of RAM would then possibly run out - I've had it happen.
