I have a new HP Envy Scepter with a solid state drive. Love it!!! It is installed with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit

When I use my laptop on my network and access folders on MAPPED drives (Z: S: etc) when using Office apps, ie. open a Word file, open a Excel file etc. I have no issues
browsing through folders.

But when I am disconnected from the Network and launch any Office 2003 application and go to open a file (local) there is a pause of approximately 8 seconds every time I try to move to a folder or different drive, no matter where the file is located, even if I want to save a NEW file from an office app.

If I were to click a second time when it pauses it says "Not Responding".

If you wait it then allows you to go to the next step and again when you click on the next folder the same thing happens, all the way to the file. Once you get to the file, it loads instantly.

This happens for ALL Office Apps when trying to access/change to a different directory. Save/Save as in the existing directory happens instantly.

These are plain old simple files, no macros no calls, nothing unusual and work fine on my desktop PCs....seems to be limited to my new laptop.

THIS IS LIMITED TO OFFICE APPS ONLY.....every other application including Explore can access and cruise through the folders instantly.

Any ideas???

Your problem may be down to the way you navigate your filing system.

Avoid using the Look In drop down list that is displayed near the top of most File Open and Save As dialog boxes.

This tries to connect to all locations in the list including your network drives. When these are not available your system will wait for each failed attempt to time out before displaying the list.

Use methods which access the required file or folder directly.

For example:
[ul]
[li]Place short cuts to frequently used files and folders in your default folder (or Windows desktop) - Somewhere easily accessible when you display a File Open or Save As dialog box.
[/li]
[li]Add short cuts to the Navigation Panel to the left of the File Open/Save As dialog boxes.
This is done by selecting the folder in the dialog box and then: Tools > Add to "My Places" - the Tools option is found in the dialog box not the Menu bar.
Short Cuts added here are available in all MS Office 2003 Applications.
Click the right mouse button in the Navigation Panel for options to customize the way its contents are displayed.
[/li]
[li]Use the Most Recently Used (MRU) file lists - available in the Windows Start menu and in the File Menu of each MS Office 2003 Application.
[/li]
[/ul]

Cheers
