Office 2001- Problem with Word

One of my clients is running OS 9.2 with Office 2001. When she opens a blank document in Word, her drop down menus (File,Edit, View) don't work. Has anybody experienced this problem? How did you resolve it?

I resolved this issue by trashing the word settings file in preferences

I have a client who when ever he saves a document, it doubles in size. Any i deas why this would happen. It is not a known virus. I turned off fast saving, and disabled embeded fonts. Anything else i should look at?
