Has anyone installed Office 2000 on a Win7 or Win8 computer?
I know they don't update it, but thought it might work for PC's that really only open
documents/spreadsheets.

Thanks

Why not just get the free viewers if all you want to do is open and view them. As office 2000 is not supported on windows 7 or win8, You could also try openoffice, it is free, and works very well.

From reading a few pages, Office 2000 WILL run on Windows 7/8 but there can be problems with Outlook and Access. It would not be advised to run it from a security hole standpoint and run the viewers or Open Office/Libre Office instead as indicated.

Plus, you could buy something like Office 2003 on Ebay pretty cheap. I just checked - $25 Office 2003 Pro Retail

It will install as Goom discovered, but the obvious problem will be your ability to open/edit documents created in newer versions of Office. Anyone using Office 2007 or later will save documents in a newer format that is not backward compatible with older versions of Office. The newer Word document extension, for example, is *.docx. You can create documents and share with other people, but your chances of opening documents being shared with you are extremely low. So why bother trying?

I would second the suggestion to use OpenOffice, which is a better solution. It's free, more secure, always being updated, and will let you open/edit all versions of MS Office documents. The interface is slightly different but will seem familiar enough to everyday MS Office users.

It should work with no problems

Bad advice. You're obviously ignoring the limitations laid out above and in this post.

And the menu entries won't move around every time you upgrade!

If you want to open .docx or .xlsx or .pptx in Word 2000, just install the compatibility pack

Just keep in mind that this allows you to view them, not edit them.

cdogg: The Microsoft site xwb linked to says otherwise:

By installing the Compatibility Pack in addition to Microsoft Office 2000, Office XP, or Office 2003, you will be able to open, edit, and save files using the file formats in newer versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint . The Compatibility Pack can also be used in conjunction with the Microsoft Office Word Viewer 2003, Excel Viewer 2003, and PowerPoint Viewer 2003 to view files saved in these new formats. For more information about the Compatibility Pack, see 924074.

Yep, you're right. I was thinking about the Office Viewers, not the compatibility pack. Good catch!

Here is a list of potential issues with opening/editing newer Office files with the compatibility pack:

If you're opening a basic Work or Excel document, chances are you won't have any problems. However, the more complex the document, the greater the chance that something will be lost in the conversion. Only features that Office 2000 can display will translate over.
