Hi,

I am having problems with my tape drive. I am running veritas backup exec 9.1 and no matter which tape i enter in the drive, it says Bad Media. I have cleaned the drive, and have tried 3 different tapes in the drive and again it says bad media. When I try to do an inventory, it takes 30 mins, although it used to take about 15 seconds. When it is doing the inventory, it hangs the server.

My tape device is a HP surestore dlt vs80

I have tried cleaned the drive 3 times.

As a last resort, i switched off the tape drive and then on again. In backup exec the device is now offline, even though the tape drive is online connected and ready.

Any ideas on these problems.....any help very much appreciated.

Many Thanks,

Peen

For the offline tape drive. In Windows, find Manage Hardware. Show the devices, is the Tape Device shown? Sometimes, the driver needs reloaded. Try using ADD/REMOVE HARDWARE. Follow the directions. Once it finds your tape device just finish running the wizard. That usually gets the device back online for me.

Tapes: how do you load the tapes? Do you use the IMPORT command? If not, try using that, then inventory the tape. I usually find that if I manually load the tapes, they usually end up as bad or unrecognized media.

Thank you for this response. It all seems to be ok, I left it overnight and it came back online.

There was a tape device update on windows update and i have run that. All is happyily working now.

Thanks again for the response.
