I have just purchased a DVD Writer its a NEC ND-1300A I noticed prior to purchase it was listed as OEM.
I always thought that OEM meant it was the basic item without cables, software etc.
Now when I have tried to get a firmware update from the NEC website it states that it is only for Retail versions not OEM.
Surely the basic hardware is no different whether OEM or Retail.
Would someone clarify this for me.

In any case,you must be very careful with firmware updates!

OEM versions of software and hardware can indeed be very specific, customized to the needs of the OEM. The publisher/builder of the item does not have to support the OEM versions, only through the OEM.
