I recently bought a Lenovo RD560 server which come with a second, free processor (all boxed). However due to Microsoft licencing I decided not to put this processor in the server. It's a decent processor and would be great for a custom PC build. However my problem is this is a Lenovo boxed/branded/OEM Intel Xeon E5-2630 V3 processor.

I would like to know, would this work if I just bought an Asus compatible motherboard or would I have some issues with the processor knowing it's not in the right motherboard because it's supposed to be in an RD650?

I've checked out the socket type (LGA2011 V3) all seems to match up.

No such thing as a "branded" processor. Other than the manufacturer, in this case Intel. The Xeon E5-2630 V3 is the same processor if it is OEM or Boxed, or has special boxing like Dell,IBM,HP,or Lenovo. The CPU is identical. Boxed just means it has a heatsink / fan and multiple years of warranty, OEM is the same cpu but bought in a batch on a tray, no heatsink, and 14 to 90 days warranty. OEM Box or branded is just an intel boxed cpu with approved cooling solution in a branded box to be sold as an upgrade or a value add from a VAR, typically this has 1 year warranty from the OEM, not Intel. And yes it should work in a motherboard that has firmware that supports the cpu.

Thanks for clearing that up, great answer! Was just worried somehow this would be locked to a lenovo motherboard.

Thanks
