Put simply, there's no problem receiving e-mails, but sending keeps asking for the password.

The username and password are correct ("Same as incoming mail") or else we would not be receiving incoming mail. It is correct because it allows access to BTYahoo! webmail. And the online pages have a wizard which generates the OE6 Account, so I'm 100% certain all the account settings, including the ports, are correct. Plus, FWIW, they have been confirmed by BTInternet's helpline.

We have run CWShredder, AVG antivirus and HiJackThis. A few suspicious items have been removed, nothing we considered critical, but the problem persists.

We have tried with AVG and ZoneAlarm both disabled, but e-mails can still not be sent.

We have removed and reinstalled OE6, but still e-mails can not be sent.

We have tried using Outlook but we can't send from Outlook either (but can receive).

There's no problem using the WebMail account.

We're still looking for the Win2K installation CD so that we can run SFC, our last hope.

Any other suggestions?

We're looking at making sure all the data is backed up, reformatting and re-installing Win2K this weekend as we're that desperate. TIA.

There is a security tick box called log on using secure password i think it is under tool emial accounts in outlook have u tried sending with that ticked? have u ever been able to send or is this a new pc?

Yes, SMTP authentication is enabled.
See:
This is not a new PC, and the inability to send e-mails started suddenly a few days ago after a long period (over a year, perhaps) without problem.

Virus/malware, auto-upgrades, corruption and possible blocking by BTInternet are our target areas, but alas, nothing so far.

Have you ever run Norton Internet Security on this machine and removed it recently to make way for AVG?

AFAIK, Norton IS has never been installed.

However, I'll go to Symantec and run their removal tool.

Have you disconnected from the internet and reconnected ?

BT have a habit of switching DNS server IPs around and taking servers offline completely every few weeks so OE is possibly trying to resolve the DNS MX to a non-existent server.

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

You mean pull the cable out and/or re-boot the router?

I'll try that.

We've got it sorted.

We were checking all settings again, and looking in AVG. We read the log, and then a window popped up indicating that e-mails had not been sent and "Click here to correct it".

I'm not sure of all the details but it seems another port has assigned to the outgoing mail, and all is now well.
