Had a virus and spyware affected machine, IE was stuffed but the email worked fine. Removed viruses and spyware, removed Norton Internet Security and replaced with AVG AV and Windows Defender, turned on Windows Firewall. IE worked fine but for a couple of days after the work was done mail wouldn't come in or go out. Then mail started to go out but still doesn't come in.
Have checked every setting I can think of firewall etc but can't for the life of me think what might be blocking incoming mail on a standard built XP Home machine.

Anybody have any ideas? This one is costign me precious time.

Thanks.

Is the Windows Firewall blocking ports 25 and 110? Open them and see what happens...

Windows Firewall is set to let OE through... been through everything I can think of in that respect. I can telnet the mail server no problem so I know all is well there.
Going to try an unistall/reinstall of OE next I think, no saying there isn't some corruption after the virus/spware infection.

I'll post back when it's sorted....got the pleasure of that visit Saturday morning.

Cheers

Thanks for that link..... I have the version for pre 2003 NIS but didn't find this tool when looking.
I have to say, it's been in the back of my mind that despite removing Norton it's still getting in the way. (I hate Norton!!)
I'll give this a spin tomorrow and let you know.
Cheers.

As promised...the solution.

The remnants of Norton I S, the anti-spam component to be precise, was blocking connections to incoming mail on port 110, couldn't telnet to the server from the machine but could from my laptop.

Ran the NIS removal tool (courtesy of tlcscousin's link) and the mail came flooding in. Bingo!!

Thanks to all for input. Another Tek-Tips victory!!
