I have a forum user who has not been able to download using OE for a couple of weeks. She shares a PC with children (presumably multi-logons) who 'can't stop clicking'. She is too far away for me to travel to and has not got on well with previous attempts to get the machine cleaned at other fora.

Is there a straightforward procedure? I'd help her through it via IM.

I've id'ed the following as threats from her log:-

Then, hit the system with the following:

Webroot Spysweeper

Download it here:

Webroot Spysweeper 14 day Trial

Update the defs and do a sweep.

Also check this out:

Ewido download:

Update it and run a complete scan.

I would also check it with some other virus scanners just to make sure.

Report back...

Best regards.

Erik

P.S.

You should also upgrade Antispyware to Windows Defender to make sure you are getting the latest updates.

Good luck

Erik

Thanks Erik, she's currently running a Safe Mode Ewido scan after completing an online scan with Panda.

As it's an eMachines PC, I was unsure about calling the ShowWnd.exe in 04, apparently it's part of their install. I'll try to check further on that one - she has said that she's suspected problems even immediately after a wipe/reinstall though - that may be part of the answer?

Would a complete reinstall of the security apps be beneficial?

I'll report back when I know more.

You probably won't hurt anything leaving that 04. I don't that is the issue, I definately think you have malware on it that would get taken off by a spysweeper scan.

I don't think a reinstall of security based apps. would help at this point.

Report back...

post another hijakc this after the scans and ost the ewido and spysweeper logs so we can see what's left and what coames back if any?

Thanks pechenegs,

I'll get that info when she gets back online.

Ok, update time.

The Ewido scan log was not saved (my fault, I'd not asked for it originally), backdoor.genlot.dx and downloader.1stbar were the only non-cookies listed.

Windows Defender is being downloaded now.

Norton now comes up with a message saying it can't be repaired, it was installed from a retail CD which she thinks may have 'gone missing' since. Should we uninstall (HaHa, I know ... ) then go AVG, ZA free, Spyblaster, host file etc.?

What about the other user logins, which apps to disinfect those?

That is my recommendation. I would use Kerio Personal Firewall instead of ZA, but that is my opinion. Go with AVG, spyblaster, winmvp host file.

That should have taken care of all other user logins.

Take care,

Erik

fix this one!

I would suggest trying the Beta comodo firewall a freeware but very good and can nearly beat all leaktests.I tw as a little bit heavy on resources but thye have promised to reduce that. See the Wilders forums for discussions on this new but very good firewall! I actually use Jetico which is the best to date for passing leaktests!

link below on setting up and configuring jetico
