I'm running Eudora Internet Mail Server (EIMS) and of my users has a problem that keeps coming up, where OE chokes on a particular email and will not download the rest of the email -- then it downloads the same 5 or 10 or whatever emails over and over again.

For example, OE says there are 17 emails waiting on the server and begins to download them, but only downloads 7 of them.

The next time OE fetches it does the same thing -- downloads 7 messages and stops. The number of messages waiting increases as the day goes on -- naturally -- but OE will only download the same 7 messages. Obviously, it is chocking on the 7th or 8th message. Not all my users have this problem. With one user the problem is chronic, with others it's happened once or twice and for some people it's never happened.

Been a long time since I've seen Eudora's server product. Sounds like you need to go in and delete the message that is stuck, or empty the mailbox alltogether if you can't remove individual messages.

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

The reason for my post is to find out how to prevent this from happening in the first place -- not how to get around the problem once it's happened, which is what your response is about. I know how to do that and have done it *too* many times (I simply remove the person's InBox on the mail server and then they can then download anything coming in after that. I have a routine for repairing the removed inbox and forward them the extracted email).

Mail servers do get corrupted mailboxes from time to time. It just happens. However, usually it is due to one or more e-mails with extremely large attachments being received. I don't know if Eudora has the capability, but you could try to restrict large attachments.

Since you know which message chokes the download you could track them and see if there is any pattern - a particular domain, isp, sender, etc. - or if it is all over the map.

If it is always a particular domain, isp, etc. causing the problem then you know that the problem is on their side and its up to them to fix it.

Cheers.
