Hi all !

Is it possible to rebuild the ODM after it gets corrupted on an AIX system , i recently faced a situation where the ODM reported inconsistencies with the device configuration database and i was unable to varyon some volumegroups and also faced several other inconsistencies. I then had to restore a previous mksysb backup to get the system back to normal. It would be very helpfull if u can suggest your ideas on the same.
thanks !

Rajesh,

Well there are two type of ODM vg problems - those relating to external vg's and those relating to rootvg.

If the problems you experienced were with external i.e. non-rootvg volume groups - then a varyoff, exportvg and importvg of all effected volume groups would resolve the problem i.e. removing the VG's from the system and recreating the entries within the ODM based on the VGDA's on the disks.

If the problem was relating to rootvg then there is a script called:

rvgrecover - this is used because for obvious reasons you cannot export/import rootvg. The script removes all references to rootvg from the ODM and then re-populates the ODM from the VGDA on a rootvg disk. A copy of this script can be found in the advanced admin. notes AIX course in the Disk Management section.

I hope this helps
