Odd Booting issues with new rig

I assembled a computer with the following parts:

nVIDA 590 SLI EVGA board
SLI ready 8600 nVIDA XXX
600W Ultra X-Finity PSU
Seagate 500 GB HD [SATA]
LiteOn DVD/CD RW [SATA]

The case, advertised as ATX compatible had short O/N, HDD LED, and reset leads. I had to solder and shrink-wrap a 24 gauge wire fragment just to get them to match up with the MB. I guess you get what you pay for...however

My major problem is that when finally assembled as closely to manufacturer specifications as possible, and the PSU power turned on, the case and MB LEDs flashed on for about 4 seconds as did all fans. After that point, only the yellow MB LED was emitting light; all other power seemed to be non-existent. Also, the PSU fans no longer functioned. The yellow LED continued to fluoresce until the PSU was switched off.

I repeated this procedure twice with the same results. The third time, there was no response to PSU activation. This has been the case since.

It has been quite awhile since I last built a computer. If I were to diagnose this according to my knowledge of older technology, I would say that only the PSU was malfunctioning. However, I am not sure that the MB and CPU were not affected [I have no replacement PSU atm to test this theory].

Is it possible that 600W is too low a rating for this system?

Any thoughts would be helpful...

Other people will no doubt tell you that 600W isn't enough for a system with an 8-series nVidia card but that's hogwash, it's definitely enough to get it up and running. If you start adding more devices and (especially) a second graphics card you could begin to tax it but for what you have, 600W is plenty.

You haven't mentioned CPU and RAM in your list but I assume you have those installed!

I find it worrying what you say about extending the button and LED leads (who would make an ATX case where these leads can't reach a standard ATX mobo?) but assuming you've done all that properly there are a few things you can look at. In no particular order:

- Is the power for the CPU fan connected correctly?
- Did you apply thermal paste properly when you fitted the CPU heatsink?
- Are all the components seated properly?
- Were you careful about static electricity when you put it all together?
- If your graphics card requires an auxiliary power connector, is this connected?

That should get you started.

Thanks Nelviticus...

However, I am careful about grounding myself. Also, most SLI graphics cards only require the additional molex PSU connection if running in serial with another SLI graphics card.

The reason there was no power, i figured after contemplating all the possibilities, was due to a circuit breaker malfunction. After restoring power, the board behaved as before. I tested the "power g" lead and the voltage was normal. Hence, the PSU is fine. I noticed also that this MB has a tiny on-board POST indicator. The hex code flashed prior to the aformentioned failure was C3. All C codes for the 950 SLI MB correspond to memory issues. C3 is the code for "extended memory", which if I recall correctly, has something to do with the cache of AMD chips, I.E. the processor is a definite lemon. Just to be sure, I removed the dual channel RAM and read the error: C1. I proceded to use my only known working 1GB of plain 800Mhz DDR2 from the computer I am writing on now, no change...still C3 as with the Dual Channel. Hence, RAM is likely fine.

Thanks anyway. I just have this odd habit of solving my own problems about 30 minutes after I verbalize the issue.
