Odd behavior with server files

Hi. I've been running into increasingly odd behavior on our LAN. The problems include :

*****
Office 2000 documents failing to save or update

Single 200K jpeg images stored on the server but being brought up on a work station spiking the workstations CPU Usage to 100% for 20 seconds to a few minutes, then finally opening.

Word or Excel 2000 files on server failing to open or to save promptly. It can take 2 minutes for the file to save.

Excel or Word files failing to save after the program tries for a minute or two: it then offers to save the file as something like 'A1392000' in the proper directory...
*****************

The server is the master DC in a single AD Domain: there is a second DC for logging purposes. There is also a remote DC which is part of this domain in another city. W2K Server SP3 is being run. The problem is VERY noticeable on WinXP Pro work stations, but can occur on W2K Pro stations as well. The server is IBM, the work stations are a mix of Dell and hand made.

It seems to me that this really ratcheted up a lot after SP3 was installed to the server.

Has anybody run into this recently? Any suggestions?

Many Thanks

Paul

Running Corporate Edition of Norton Antivirus on all servers, auto update.

FWIW, I received a post in another forum which stated they had a similar problem which was resovled by power cycling the switch. I'm going to give that a try. If it works, I'll look for a firmware upgrade for the switch.

However if anyone else has encountered this please feel free to share with the rest of us :}

We have a similar problem. Luckily, it is sporadic. Would you share what you found out about power cycling your ethernet switch? FYI We are using a Netgear switch.

Thanks

One thing to check with Norton Corporate Edition is if you are also running the client portion of Norton make sure the realtime scan is NOT set to check network drives also. This could cause your problem and it is redundant to have this turned on if all your machines have antivirus because any mapped drive would be scanned locally by its own realtime scan.

If that isnt the case check out these other threads..

good luck

Well.. the switch may not have been it in this case. The new XP user who was having the most difficulty has been out the past few days, however after power cycling the switch ( HP Procurve ) I find my own Office 2000 documents are continuing to drag from time to time when saving or occasionally opening.
This all started shortly after W2K Server SP3 was installed on our master DC, so I was wondering if anyone else could corroborate this behavior with their own experiences with SP3.
One of the links given in this thread points to

( hope that copy works for you ) It looks promising.
