Odd behavior opening messages

GroupWise 6.5.5 on Windows 2000 sp4

When the user opens certain messages (not all), the message doesn't appear, the box is just a blank grey box (not white like a blank text box, just a blank grey box). If he then clicks on the Properties tab, the Outside-In Viewer starts, and the properties page opens. At that point, he can then click on the Mail tab and the message appears.

Anyone seen anything like this before?

Is it html being viewed as text?

Well, I think what the problem is that it's multi-part mime, part text, part html. If the view is set to Text or HTML, the result is the same behavior.
